Forging
is the oldest known process of working metal which can be dated back to
prehistoric times. This art and skill once practised by armour makers and
the village blacksmith (in olden days) has been developed and supplemented
by modern techniques and the metallurgical knowledge, that the process of
forging improves the quality and structure of the metal by refining the
grain and giving it strength and resistance to impact and fatigue.
This ancient skill has long been practiced in Sheffield,
a city famous for the production of its quality steel and the craftsmen
who manufacture the finest hand tools. One such craftsman Mr. Eric Wigfull
who learnt the skill of forging by serving a lifetime apprenticeship,
established E.Wigfull Tools in 1958, a Sheffield company producing quality
hand tools by the traditional method of spring hammer forging.
